Film City boasts of a rich heritage dating back to the birth of Indian Cinema in late 19th century

    • Lumiere brothers screen six silent films at the Watson's hotel marking the birth of Indian cinema.
1913

    • Father of Indian cinema and legendary filmmaker Late Shri Dadasaheb Phalke introduces India's very first full-length feature film 'Raja Harishchandra' and the very first film to have its theatrical release through the Olympia Theaters in Mumbai for the Indian masse

    • India witnesses her first sound-film as 'Alam Ara' debuts at Majestic Cinema in Mumbai (then Bombay).
1937

    • India's very first indigenous made colour-film 'Kisan Kanya' is premier

    • Under the expert council of Late Shri V. Shantaram, Late Shri BR Chopra and Shri Dilip Kumar, 'Film City' under the umbrella of Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation Ltd is incorporated on September the 26th, 1977 under the companies act, 1956. Studios 1-7 are set-up.

    • Studios 8-16 are established. A dedicated Communications centre is inaugurated and Reliance Media Works commence their operations by setting-up their studio.

  • MFSCDCL sets up Maharashtra Film Cell

    • UNESCO declares Mumbai as the Creative City of Films launch of single-window cell for Filming Permissions in Maharashtra.
